At that moment, a giant whale with a squid lower body breached the surface and landed atop the flatbed and engine, crushing them and sending them to the bottom.

Except for the caboose.

And Chairwalker and Ruupert.

Meanwhile, back at where the Gatekeeper was...

"Good news sir!" a random SE officer declared, as he and a group of soldiers showed up carrying a box of sensor equipment, "We found some more advanced sensors being stored in the basement of the bakery down the street. We won't need to wait for the train."

The Gatekeeper took the box.

Vasul got off the phone-link and took the box.

"We just lost the train. This will come in handy," he said, moving to install the equipment.

The Gatekeeper said nothing.

A few minutes later...

"Well... we have news, gentlemen," Vasul reported after scanning the crystal again, presuming the Gatekeeper and the random SE officer who brought him the box with the sensors were still present, "This crystal is actually not a crystal at all. It is in fact organic."

The Gatekeeper stopped aimlessly staring out into space and paid legitimate attention.

"Organic?" he repeated.

"More specifically, it seems to be an egg chamber."

Everyone in the room looked up.

"Eggs? Like chicken eggs?" the random SE officer wondered, "Hrmph... That's one big-ass chicken."

"It's gonna burst out and eat us all at any minute! FLEE! FLEE FOR YOUR LIVES!" one of the regular troopers screamed, before heading for the hills.

The regular trooper who ran was eradicated by the guards at the door.

"Not quite. We are talking parasites," Vasul shook his head.

The Gatekeeper showed no emotion externally.

"What kind of parasites?" he asked.

"Hard to tell," was the reply, "We won't know for certain until we send a team in."

"That poor team." the random officer remarked, taking off his hat and holding it over his heart.

"Those poor baby parasites." the random officer stated, still holding his hat to his heart for another moment, then putting it back on.

"If I may?" Vasul interjected, "The team, whoever is on it, may want to get moving relatively soon. The sooner this is done, the better."

"Right!" the random officer (who's name, for the record, is Lt. Rand M. Mann) snapped to attention, "Porkins! Ready the squad! Usain, run back to the bakery and get those toxin filtering masks we found in the flour cabinet! Oh, and draft the baker into to the squad to replace Timmons over there..."

He motioned at the trooper who had tried to run, only to get obliterated by the guards.

"If the Baker isn't there, recruit his wife. If his wife isn't there, draft his son. If his son isn't there, draft his daughter. If his daughter isn't there, draft his dog. If the dog isn't there either, confiscate two dozen doughnuts for the inconvenience and get them over here pronto! MOVE IT!" Lt. Mann barked.

Trooper Usain bolted out of the building to get to the bakery, while Porkins made the squad check over their weapons. Lt. Mann seemed pleased as he turned back to the Gatekeeper and Vasul.

"Do not fret, gentlemen; we'll get to the bottom of this!" he declared.

A short while later, Lt. Mann and his squad were standing in ankle-deep water just a few feet away from the organic crystal entrenched within and around the spacescraper. Dr. Scientist Vasul and his staff (Unless they were replaced for incompetence) would be on commlink throughout the procedure.

"Well gentlemen, here it is. The greatest scientific procedure of the past 45 minutes. With any luck, we can make it the greatest scientific procedure of the past week. Good luck in there!"

There was some mumbling on his side, and Vasul spoke again.

"Oh, yes, your instructions. You are to infiltrate the structure, ascertain its full nature and status and, if necessary, terminate any lifeforms present inside. There is no timeframe for this mission. Usual Imperial disclaimer: If you die, you will be forgotten. If you give up, you will be killed. This time our Emperor is on site to forget and or kill you himself!"

...

"That is all."

*Comm silence*

The reddish structure stood before like a shadow in the night - it was night now, by the way, at least here - and looking up they could not determine where building began and crystal ended. Its color had faded drastically and had began to blend in with its surroundings.

On the ground however, in the ankle-deep water that really shouldn't be there, it was obvious enough to make insertion.

One of the troopers came up with a plasma torch and began cutting into the crystals exterior. After making a few smaller holes as tests, he proceeded to cut out a large, doorframe-shaped hole that the squad would enter through. That done, Lt. Man and his squad entered.

"You have point, Porkins." Mann ordered.

Porkins, a slightly more hefty fellow, but also more heavily armed than the others, took over the lead at this point. Behind him was Lt. Mann, who was munching a doughnut with one hand and holding a blaster pistol with his other. The rest of the squad filed in behind them, then the plasma torch guy entered last, bringing the torch with him in case they needed to cut through anything else.

After a little bit of walking, during which someone was hopefully recording the surroundings that were much brighter inside than out. Almost crimson in appearance on the walls. The floor was a messy mix of crimson and dark red, almost black, as was the ceiling. Small pods hung from the walls and ceiling, colored red, and it was a steady uphill climb as they were going up a spacescraper.

Vasul, who was watching through somebody's shoulder camera, probably Mann's, had left his jovial attitude at the cut-out door.

"The textures of the floors and walls look almost like dried blood," he commented, making a note.

It was anything but dry, however. Every step the squad took was like walking on lillypads, and Lt. Mann was finding his doughnut very unpleasant, no doubt. The aroma in the air, not to mention the smell, stuck to everything.

Actually, how the hell Lt. Mann was even eating the doughnut in the first place is a great mystery, given the squad was supposedly wearing toxin-filtering masks that Usain had gone to fetch. Of course, even then the smell would still have come through the masks, since smell itself wasn't a toxin.

"Is... the crystal a lifeform?" one of the troopers wondered aloud.

"Keep an eye on the pods." Lt. Mann suggested, "In all likelihood those are eggs."

One of the twitchier soldiers instantly shifted his weapon aim toward the ceiling, and all the pods. But he didn't fire and just kept following along.

Vasul looked through his notes.

"According to earlier scans, the crystal is a parasitic lifeform," he commented to the trooper, then added to Mann, "See if you can get a reading on one of those pods. I might be able to check it for life readings."

"Trooper, hand me that scanner." Mann ordered.

The trooper handed Mann a stud finder.

"Trooper, where did you learn to distinguish you scanners?" Mann deadpanned.

"At the academy sir!" the trooper replied.

"Here on Komm?" Mann questioned, wondering how bad the academy had gotten since he went there.

"No sir! The Oregonias Branch, sir!" the trooper replied.

"That explains it." Mann chuckled, muttering something about third-world planets, before snatching the correct scanner from said trooper and beginning to scan the pod.

Vasul didn't get the reference.

But he did start his analysis.

"Lesse... temperatures are surprisingly low, almost ground-level, in fact. Nothing appears to be moving in there. Nothing of real interest. No, I would say there is no life in these pods. Or at least in that one. Go ahead and break it open. There does seem to be something in it, but whatever it is is most certainly not a living thing."

"Copy that." Mann replied to Vasul, "Trooper, hand me that knife."

The trooper gave Mann a combat knife.

"No you buffoon, this is a combat knife. It is meant for combat. There is nothing alive here, therefor there is no combat involved!" Mann snapped, giving the trooper the knife back, "Give me a non-combat knife!"

The trooper gave Mann a butter knife.

Mann looked at it, found it satisfactory, and began cutting the pod open.

Vasul thought he heard a faint echo of combat knife from somewhere across the ocean.

"There it is again..." he muttered.

As the pod was cut open, several bloodstained humanoid bones fell out, along with torn, bloody and tattered rags. It quickly became apparent what they were.

"That's not what I expected to see..." one of Vasul's lab mates said to himself.

"Okay so here's the thing," the man himself came back on the line, "That appears to be an Imperial citizen. Or what's left of him."

"From where? I thought the building had been evacuated." Mann questioned.

The Oregonianian trooper was getting nostalgic feelings of home for some reason.

"I did too..." Vasul agreed with Mann, "I oversaw the evacuation in fact. If every one of those pods are filled with bones, that's..."

Vasul did some quick math.

"Judging from the amount of pods you have already seen, and the sheer size of the crystal you have yet to cover... we could be looking at well over a million lives lost. But from where?"

"And how did they get here?" one of the troopers asked worriedly.

"Curious indeed... I see no appendages capable of offensive action." Mann added, "How did this creature capture them?"

"I don't know. But it is our job - well, your job, technically - to find out," said Vasul from the safety of his lab.

"If this all goes south, by the way, I just want you guys to know... the Emperor has pre-authorized the Uberweapon to bombard the crystal. In this worst-case scenario, the vessel will train a planetary laser upon the parasite and, well, boom. As it stands now, however, with the discovery of deceased citizens, I am authorizing lethal force against anything you find in there. This mission is no longer to examine. This is to exterminate a threat to the Empire."

"Acknowledged, sir! We won't let you or the emperor down!" Mann replied.

"Uh, sir... if the Uberweapon is prepared to bombard the site, why don't we just pull out and do that instead?" a trooper asked.

"But, that would be turning turning down work... Why would one ever turn an opportunity to work? Work for the emperor I mean." the Oregonianian trooper retorted.

Mann smiled and slapped said trooper on the shoulder.

"That's the spirit! Son, there's hope for you yet." he stated, "Alright... Porkins! Let's get a move on!"

Porkins nodded, then took up point once more.

What felt like an eternity later, the squad was on the 42nd floor.

"Lt. Mann? You've got an incoming parasitic life-form. Apart from you and your squad it is the only one we can pick up in this whole mess of a tower," the voice of Vasul broke comm silence.
