Cold Secrets

In 2167 World War Three ravaged Earth, leaving it almost entirely a wasteland. Nations converged, and working together, designed the Arks: The Inception, The Hyperion, and The Endeavor. Loaded with cryogenically frozen passengers, the three ships are launched into space, beginning their three-hundred year journey to the planet dubbed Eden. There, the colonists would build a new home, and give humanity a chance to start anew.
    Some time later...
The Inception awakens the passengers from cryosleep ahead of schedule, alarms blaring. Something has hit the ship, sending it into emergency mode. The passengers and emergency systems manage to slow the ship as it enters the atmosphere of an unknown planet, though in their attempts to slow her down, The Inception splits into two pieces, each half either crashing or landing roughly two-hundred miles apart.
There are heavy casualties, but approximately one-hundred colonists from the front half of the ship survive. They find themselves on a small, inhospitable planet dubbed Beta 61. Nothing but snow, hills, a few trees and a mountain range in the distance. With no contact with the other half of the ship, or any easy means to reach them, they have no idea how many, if any at all, survived on that end. For now, the colonists have little choice but to set up and try to survive in and around the ruins of The Inception, and hope that any survivors in the other half are doing the same.

Rules
1. Dedicated. Do not join if you can’t stay. If you want to leave for any reason, you have to kill your character off in a way that makes sense. You can’t just leave and say “Kill my character if you want.” You have to do it.
2. Literate. An occasional mistake is okay, but please try to be as literate as you can.
3. No Powerplaying, unless the creator of the character specifically asked you to (though, try to avoid asking unless absolutely necessary).
4. No Godmodding. Keep in mind that not all of these people are strong, good fighters, geniuses, etc. Some might be, but a majority of the colonists would be regular citizens. Stick with the supplies they would have on hand, and don't go inventing random things out of convenience. People can't just go around pulling Neutron Death Rays out of their butts.
5. No Sympathy Sams or Mary Sues.
6. No more than three main characters per player.
7. Keep it realistic. Tech isn't drastically different from what it is now. Guns still have bullets, not lasers; ships don't travel at the speed of light (hence the cryo-freezing); and there is no insta-heal goop, though maybe we can have something that speeds it along.
8. Follow the rules posted here at all times.

Try to keep genders and ages fairly mixed.

Here's the character skeleton. We strongly recommend creating a Wikia page for your characters here , to keep everything neat and organized.

Name: Destrus Owens

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Occupation/Specialty: Soldier, Survivalist

Appearance: Destrus looks like a typical soldier. He was dragged straight from the Marines, after all. He stands at an even 6'0", with a muscular build. His dirty blond hair is cut short, to the point of prickliness. He keeps his facial hair to a minimum. At most, it will stretch to a faint hint of a beard. He has fire-orange eyes, which he had altered himself. He carries himself with confidence, and usually wears typical soldier garb. A dark-green t-shirt, military fatigues, and combat boots. If on a mission, he wears dark-blue clothing over body armor. His lips are thin, and he possesses a scar across his right cheek. He smiles little, and is very serious about both his job and his personal life.

Other: He regularly carries a concealed handgun and a knife in his boot. "Never go into a fistfight without a backup." He says.

Name: Emillian Chaffey

Age(When entering cold-sleep):21

Gender: Female

Occupation/Specialty(Why is your character on the colony ship?): A cryogenicist, although she got put in engineering instead.

Appearance(Include Clothing, pictures are optional, but nice.): Just a normal white tshirt and dark jeans. She has a heart necklace on her, but it doesn't mean anything and is only there for decoration. Her blond hair hangs to her shoulders, a little wavy and a little frizzy but otherwise manageable. She has dark brown eyes that she hates, because really, if you're stuck with blond hair you could at least have blue or green eyes. She's always been a stick, so everything fits her well, but she wishes she had a bigger cup size. Never been fashionable - only likes to wear things that are comfortable for her.

Personality (optional): She's shy and modest, so much she might not even talk to you for the first few months she knows you. A giant superhero fan (although I think that would make it superheroes from the 21st century).

Bio (optional): She has a little brother, but can't find him. She's been taking care of him since she was eighteen and they were both kicked out of the house for no reason in particular. She did take graduate highschool at an early age and was in college before taking a job up at the ship. She does have asthma, but it's not severe. I'm hoping this will add a little drama.

Time seemed to be passing in a blur for Lincoln Jones, and his wife Samara, as they had spent the last few hours being escorted from room to room, hallway to hallway, being processed, examined, documented, and injected with various chemicals that were necessary to keep them alive during the cryofreezing process. They finally arrived at Samara's designated cryostation - Lincoln's station was a couple rooms farther down.

"What's the holdup?" One of the crewmembers escorting them asked as Lincoln stopped.

Lincoln replied, "Just give us a minute."

He placed a hand on his wife's belly. She was three months pregnant, which was why her station was in a separate room than his - She had to use a special kind of cryopod, in order to preserve the baby as well. Samara put her hand on his.

"We'll be fine." She said with a smile, though she had tears in her eyes. "All three of us."

"I'll just be two rooms down the hall. We'll see each other again soon." Lincoln replied.

"Soon being three hundred years." Samara joked as she wiped a tear from her eye.

"To us, we'll wake up right after closing our eyes."

They just smiled at each other for a moment, before the crewman spoke up again. "Okay, time to move."

"I love you." Samara whispered as one of them began to escort Lincoln away.

"Love you too.." He replied over his shoulder. He kept looking back, watching another crewmember help her get into her pod, until he and his escort passed through a doorway which closed behind them. It wasn't long before he too was being helped into a cryopod. He knew that once the door closed, he would either wake up instantly, or not wake up at all. Once he was in, the lid began moving down, just about to seal.

"Please God keep us safe..." He whispered a prayer for him and his family just before his world went dark.

Kaitlyn hugged her sister tightly, knowing she would never see her again. "Take care of Mom for me." She said, stepping back.
Talia wiped tears from her eyes, laughing. She said something, but was drowned out by the crackled voice of an announcer over the PA system.
Inception doors closing in thirty minutes
"Go," Talia told her, "You don't want to miss it."
Kaitlyn nodded. "Don't worry about Raina, she'll be fine. We'll meet up as soon as she gets off." Her older sister was always worrying about something, and their youngest sister going on a ship alone had been eating at her for weeks. They had tried to get Raina on the Inception, but it was booked full by the time they had gotten their places. It didn't really matter though, since the passengers would all be asleep for the entirety of the trip, and the Hyperion would land in the same area as Kait.
She hurried off to the ship, heart thumping in her chest with nerves. It was a massive beast, towering over every nearby building. Kait counted one hundred twenty steps to the top of the ramp. A crewman checked her credentials to make sure she was on the passenger list and had been processed, then led her down a hallway. Most of the stations were occupied by now, their passengers occupied.
The crewman stopped at a room with several empty pods, and showed her which was hers. She climbed in a lay down, a bit hesitant. She hardly knew anything about cryopods, or their safety, why was she doing this? Why was she letting Raina do this? She shoved her doubts away as the lid descended on her. It was too late to back out now.

Nathan caught her hand in a vicelike grip, making Emillian catch her breath. The crewmember sterilized her arm, then prepared to inject the liquid. Emillian immediately tensed, shutting her eyes.
"When did you become so brave?" she inquired of Nathan.
"I like needles."
Emillian lifted the corner of her mouth, but it disappeared as the needle poked her skin. She could feel it going deeper, making a microscopic hole inside of her. "Maybe you can take my shots for me."
"Not allowed," the crewmember murmured.
Emillian glanced at Nathan, a smile back on her face. "They don't have a sense of humor, do they?"
Nathan shook his head, giggling.
It felt like one shot after the other, questionares (which Nathan complained about), conversations that would not be remembered. Emillian felt like swiss cheese by the time they were escorted to their room, air whistling through the holes in her arm. Nathan stopped at the doorway, staring wide-eyed at the pod.
"What if I wake up early?" he whispered, taking a step backwards.
Emillian bent down, brushing his light brown hair from his forehead. He needed a haircut. That would be the first thing they did when they got there. "Then you grab the biggest, poliest metal pole you can find and you break open my pod, okay?"
"Not allowed," the crewmember interjected from the corner of the room.
Emillian rolled her eyes, leaning close to murmur in Nathan's ear. "Don't listen to him." She pulled away, studying his face. His eyes had begun to water. So much for his bravery early today. "Do you have everything you need? Picca?"
Nathan held up the leg of a formless black shape. It used to be a panther, but years of wear and tear had reduced it to a limp sack of beans. "I didn't bring my jacket," he burst out, his face flooding with tears.
Emillian almost joined him. She brought his head forward, kissing his forehead. It tasted of sweat. "It's going to be alright. An adventure. You just need to sleep for a while. Take a nap, okay?" She had to wipe his hair away from his face again.
Emillian lifted him off his feet, tucking him into the pod. She stepped back to watch it close, then stared at his face. He looked happier, despite the watermarks running down his cheeks. Peaceful. Emillian sure hoped she looked that way.
She climbed into her own pod, making a checklist for when she get off this blasted ship. Haircut. A new jacket for Nathan. A nice shower. Food - Nathan would definitely be hungry. Her hand felt for her inhaler, just to be sure she had it. She had been sure to get a brand new one before they left.
The lid shut with a hiss, trapping her inside. She fought the urge to lash out, to beat against the glass. She was going to be fine. They were going to wake up three hundred years from now, totally safe and happy. Emillian took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and fell asleep.

Nearly three hundred years later...

Lincoln Jones awoke to the sound of blaring alarms and a synthesized voice informing the Inception's crew and passengers that the ship's hull and been breached and the engines were failing. His cryopod was already open and the ship was shaking and groaning. He stepped out of his pod and immediately lost balance and fell face first onto the cold metal floor. After exiting cryosleep, most people felt cold and clammy for the first hour or so, and Lincoln was no exception. The rocking ship didn't help him either.
He managed to push himself back up to his feet, and he grabbed onto his cryopod to keep himself upright. He looked around the room he was in, and saw several others emerging from their cryopods as well.
"Samara..." He whispered to himself upon remembering that his wife was in the next room.

He quickly made his way across the room, using the other cryopods for support, and avoiding the other people. He reached the door to the room he saw his wife disappear into three hundred years ago, but it was damaged and jammed shut. It was airtight and had no window, so he had no idea what was going on on the other side. He pounded on it a couple times, then yelled "Samara! Are you alright?"
    He received no reply.
"The door's stuck! I'm going to find a way to open it! I'll be right back!" He added.
Lincoln had no idea whether his wife could hear him or not, but he wasn't going to wait around with the ship in peril. He turned around and headed for the other exit, intent on finding something or someone who could possibly help him.

Her heart beat fast, as it normally did when she was jolted awake. Out of habit, Emillian reached for her inhaler, then stared in front of her, wondering what had happened. Had they arrived? It felt like it. Her hands fumbled against the door, searching for a knob or opening. What was that infernal ringing? Frustrated, she kicked with her knee - the door gave way a little bit. She watched people run by her. Nathan. Emillian pushed harder, falling to the ground as the door broke loose.

She felt as if she weighed a million pounds. Her legs felt like jelly. "Nathan!" she called, crawling to his pod. The door hung lopsidedly, empty. "Nathan!" she screamed again, turning away. Picca was nowhere in sight. That was good, it meant he had not been kidnapped. Her legs were beginning to work again. Also good. Emillian stood, shakily at first, then joined the throng of people running in arbitrary directions. Perhaps if she found someone in uniform, they would be able to explain this to her. At this point, she would settle for the cranky crewmember.

For a moment Kaitlyn was too disoriented to realize what was going on. She lay shivering in her pod for a few seconds as the alarms howled around her. The lid had opened, and the room outside was dark, lit only with the soft red glow of emergency lights.
Kait staggered out of the pod, looking around the room. The other passengers in her station had already left, but the hall was teeming with people. A robotic voice repeated a message about engine failure every couple minutes. It was telling people to stay calm, but it didn't look like anyone was doing so. She passed a man who stood in a corner muttering prayers under his breath hysterically, and others screamed in terror and confusion.
A man in uniform jogged down the hall, and Kait caught at his sleeve. "What's going on?" She asked. "Are the other ships okay?"
He shook his head, already pulling away. "I don't know anything about the other ships, I'm just checking the pods." Before she could ask anything else, he hurried away from her and was lost in the crowd.

Lincoln continued through the various cryopod station rooms, passing dozens of other passengers, many with a similar plight, attempting to reunite with friends and family, or find out what was happening to the ship. While he wished he could help some of them, he wouldn't be able to help them all, and his first and only priority right now was getting back to his wife.

Emillian was frantic. Any uniform she could find would merely shrug her off or run away. "Nathan!" she yelled again before rounding a corner. She slammed into a body (Kaitlyn) and managed to fall on her butt. Before she could say a word, she asked, "Have you seen Nathan?"

Kait stumbled as someone collided with her, but she steadied herself against the smooth wall of the ship. The ship shuddered and she almost lost her balance again. "I don't know," She said, relieved that she might have something to do other than worry about the Hyperion. "Who is Nathan?"

"M-My little brother," Emillian mumbled, covering her mouth. "He's small, so small. And really, really scared. Blond hair and light eyes and I-I lost him. Crap, I lost him!" she exclaimed, running a hand through her hair. A sharp pang of ice went through her body. She had promised him everything would be okay and he was gone! "What if he's dead? Have you seen any dead people? Do you know what's happening?"

Kait shook her head and offered her hand to Emillian to help her up. "I haven't seen any bodies, and I don't know any more than you do." The synthesized message was still repeating itself over the speakers.

Emillian took her hand, although she did not really want to stand. Crawling into a corner and sobbing sounded like the pleasanter option. "Do you think the Captain would know?"

An out-of-breath male voice suddenly came over the intercom system, "This is your captain speaking, the ship about to break through the atmosphere, everyone brace for imp-"
He had just got out of cryosleep and made it to the cockpit before saying that, though he was unable to finish his sentence as the ship groaned and jolted harder than it ever had so far, knocking any on their feet back down to the floor, or against the walls. This included Lincoln, who was actually now in the same room as Emillian and Kaityln, though he had walked right past them since he didn't know them. Laying on his side on the floor, he grabbed onto the nearest thing he could, which was a doorway, as the Inception entered a barely-controlled free-fall towards the planet's surface.

Kait stumbled backwards, reflexively releasing Emillian's hand as the ship shook. Her shoulder slammed into a wall. She slid down it, pressing herself against the cold surface and clutching the corner as tightly as she could. There was an audible pop as the pressure in the ship changed. Impact. That was a word that Kait had never expected she'd hear when she boarded.

Emillian found herself on her butt again, landing hard. The back of her head hit the wall, sending a dull pain through her entire head. The change in air pressure led to a tightening in her chest, and Emillian fumbled for her inhaler, taking a deep breath. "What was that?" she exclaimed, stuffing the inhaler in her pocket. The tightness had begun to recede.

The pilot, and soon the co-pilots that joined him, were frantically attempting to regain control of the ship, but they soon discovered that she was too damaged to be successfully piloted back into space. So they decided to try to bring it in for a rough landing. They activated the emergency thrusters to slow it's fall, which worked for a time, but the thrusters on the rear end of the ship failed to activate due to engines being lost. The gigantic vessel began tilting upwards as it continued it's descent, before a crack abruptly formed in the center, followed by the ship literally tearing in half, both sections spinning and plummeting towards the ground.

The split occurred a couple hundred meters down the hall from where Emillian, Kaityln, and Lincoln were, and everyone in the immediate area, those three included, were suddenly pulled towards the newly created exit at an alarming velocity. Lincoln slid down across the floor for a few seconds before going up and colliding with the ceiling, the whole time desperately trying to grab onto something - anything - that would stop him from flying outside the ship, where he would surely fall to his death. He managed to get a hold of a wall, but soon another passenger collided with him and both were sent continuing out the hallway and towards open air. He caught a loose cable, dangerously close to the end. After getting a good grip on the cable itself, Lincoln reached out an arm and attempted to catch anyone else who was flying by - unsuccessfully, for the most part. Dozens of screaming men and women were lost to the powerful force of gravity.

Kait's scream was drowned out by the deafening roar of wind and alarms as she was sucked towards the gaping hole in the ship. She caught onto the edge of a doorway and held on for dear life. Icy winds whipped at her skin and hair, trying to yank her loose. Just seconds later, she was knocked free by a flying body. Luckily, the knock sent her hurtling back through another doorway, where she was slammed against a wall, sore, but safe. As safe as a person could be in this situation, at least.

Emillian felt her hair whip around her head before she could register its presence, the sliding of her feet before realizing the ship had tilted. Tilted. Emillian panicked, grabbing for the nearest thing she could find, which happened to be a floor tile. She experienced a sickly sweet moment of relief before it broke off, catapulting her towards the opening.

Lincoln reached out and was, fortunately for Emillian, lucky enough to grab a hold of the young woman's wrist just before she could fly right out into open air. He nearly lost his own grip on the cable, but he held firm for dear life, despite the fact that the cable was now beginning to cut into his hand.
