It didn't look like much from the outside. Just some cheerless old planks, stone, and a wooden door built into a recessed portion of the side of a large hill, some ways off the road. It'd be easy to miss even in the light of day, let alone in the darkness of the cloudy dusk it was now. Still, the entrance, as it were, had some amount of character to it.

"Reminds me of home," A halfling muttered to herself, pulling out a small leather-bound book and hunching her body over to protect the pages from the steady downpour of rain as she consulted her notes. Satisfied, she wrapped and pocketed the book, then made her way to the door in the hill.

"Hope this is the right place..."

Pushing the heavy door open, she was met by the jingle of a bell, and a few odd stares and whispers by the patrons inside. The bartender was rubbing a glass, though it was getting no cleaner, and made little effort to acknowledge the new arrival.

The inside was nearly as homely as the outside, though far larger feeling. Wooden beams support the ceiling above, each with large half-melted candles attached to them. The walls were decorated with a smattering of low-quality paintings, all in about the same style, as though they were created by the same person. Accompanying the paintings were scratched and scribbled messages just about everywhere, most of them old, worn, dusty, and unreadable.

The tavern entrance itself only had a few of people, a couple sitting at the bar, a few others at tables, quietly conversing or sitting alone in eerie silence. There was a much larger, and louder crowd deeper into the tavern, past the bar, circled around what the halfling guessed was an animal fighting pit.

Undaunted by any of this, or the muscular half-orc bouncer standing near the door, the halfling made her way to the bar and climbed up onto a stool.

Sitting at the bar was a grisly looking dwarf. His beard was overgrown, practically covering his whole face, while a dark cape draped over his shoulders hid his the rest of his body. He suspiciously looked at every person who walked in, gradually hiding deeper and deeper within his cape. He looked at the halfling and thought to himself,
"There sits the scum of the earth! Hypocritical monsters!"
He took a swig of his drink lowered his eyes to the bar. His mind began to drift. He didn't like to run, he didn't like to hide, but death was his only other option. His memory went back to a dark cave, with the sound of dripping water echoing throughout the caverns. He was alone, afraid, and only a child. He didn't know if he had been abandoned, or if his whole family was dead. He hid shivering in a corner, when a halfling entered the cave. The seemingly-gentle figure brought him out of his cave, and to his home.
He was jolted from his thoughts when he heard a voice behind him.

"Hi." The halfling said cheerfully, sitting right next to the dwarf.

The look on his face started as one of shock, but quickly turned to a scowl.
"What do you want shorty?" he said as he turned his head back towards his drink.

"Food. And technically I'm almost three inches above average. Is there a menu here, or...?" The halfling woman replied with a smile.

The bartender wordlessly supplied a tattered parchment menu.

    "Thanks."

He rolled his eyes struggling to maintain his scowl.
"Just a word of warning, don't eat anything here."

The halfling paused halfway through the menu. Her eyes shifted back and forth with suspicion, then she leaned a little closer to the dwarf and asked, "Why?" in a whisper, so the bartender wouldn't hear.

"...Oh..." She leaned back to an upright position. "Well, at least it's not as wasteful that way." She cleared her throat to get the bartender's attention, "Could I get a tankard of cider, and some biscuits?"

He glanced at the door as another figure entered the room, but then relaxed again as they walked toward the fights.

"That'll be ten silver." The barkeep drawled.

"...On second thought, hold the cider."

    "Three silver."

The halfling pulled up a bag and began digging around in it. She found one silver coin, set it on the bar, then began searching another bag, where she found a couple more. The bartender took the coins, then sent a menu to the back kitchen area.

She case the dwarf a couple sideways glances while waiting. Then she shrugged her shoulders and popped her neck.
    "So, what brings you here?"

Her eyes glanced around again without turning her head, "Which one's your favorite?"

"You're pretty nosy shorty, what does it matter what I like to drink!" He snapped.

Shorty didn't blink or look dissuaded in the slightest.

"It's good to know who's in the tavern with you." She said with rather unusual voice inflections. "Oh hey, biscuits."

The barkeep set a plate of biscuits in front of the halfling.

    "Thank ye kindly." She said.

"Eh." He grunted in reply, getting back to rubbing glasses with a cloth.

"If you're worried about your surroundings Shorty, don't stay in that place to long." He finished his drink and signaled the bartender for another.
"Everyone looks suspicious here, but if someone didn't look suspicious, I would be most suspicious of him."

Just then, someone very unobtrusive stepped into the tavern. He was about six feet tall and wiry, and had fine, youthful features. He wore a simple brown knitted hat and homespun clothes, neatly patched in a few places. His boots were old, scuffed, and stained with what looked like some kind of berry juice. He was likely just a farmhand.
The young man smiled at the bartender with friendly blue eyes as he approached. "Evenin'," He said as he took a seat a couple of stools away from the halfling and the dwarf. "Can I get a pint of ale?" He was already setting the appropriate sum on the counter.

"He doesn't look suspicious at all." The halfling noted quietly.

"About what?" She asked idly, as she hopped off her stool and moved around the dwarf and climbed up on one of the seats between him and the new guy.

"Hi." She said cheerfully, again, this time to the new guy.

The young man looked down and smiled. "Hello, miss. I don't think I've seen you around here before; are you traveling?"

"Forward. And by forward I mean backward, out the door and back the way I came, but with a couple extra left turns."
