The halfling sighed. "I really thought that'd work... well okay, just lemme keep my bags."

"Are you in a position to make demands?" the woman asked sarcastically, as one of the guards came up to the halfling with a pair of shackles.

The halfling hesitated for a moment to think about that, eyes flicking from side to side.

"Err, is that a trick question?"

The woman scoffed and motioned for her men to take the prisoners out.

The three at the bar, along with numerous others, were shackled, chained-together, and led outside. The city of Shoonsville, a medium-sized town with a wooden-stockade wall around it to protect from bandit attacks, was just a couple miles up the road.

With guards flanking the column, the group began it's trek down the road, with the lady officer eventually taking point.

"Oh well. That could have gone better." The halfling mused aloud as she walked, "Just another bump in the road."

Thirsty, since she never got her drink in the tavern, she threw her head back and began trying to catch raindrops in her mouth.

The man didn't protest his imprisonment, but glanced behind them several times, as if he expected to be followed.

"I'm sure they'll let us go." The halfling said nonchalantly after a couple minutes, to either the dwarf or the tall guy, both of whom she was chained near. "All just a big misunderstanding."

One of the guards snickered upon overhearing that.

"It always is, isn't it?" The man mused, not taking any notice of the guard.

The dwarf walked on with his head down. His memory went back to the halfling who rescued him from the cave, and to his home which was always filled with joy and laughter. But then there was that night, that one horrible night.
The roaring thunder jolted him from his thoughts, and back the reality that was upon him. He looked at the halfling, and then the tall man. Can he trust them? Should he trust them?
"Hey Shorty," he whispered so the guard wouldn't hear, "do they got anything on you?"

"Hm..." She had to think about it for a moment. And then a couple more moments. Then a few seconds more for good measure.

"Nah," She finally said, "I'm sure they don't."

Said farm boy didn't seem to realize the dwarf was talking to him for a few seconds. "What? ...No."

"You were supporting an underworld establishment; that's enough to get you all jail time." the snickering guard remarked.

"Don't speak to the prisoners!" one of the other guards snapped.

The first guard let out a sigh and shrugged.

"The only support I was providin' was of the morale variety! So unless you're immoral you won't hold me long." The half-ling said confidently.

"Shut it!" the second guard hissed.

"Funny how it's only immoral to go to a pub when you're not a guard." the dwarf said under his breath.

There was no reply as the guards continued their onward trek.

Soon the column came upon the city, where the officer lady hailed the gate guard and demanded entry. She was obliged and the group was granted entry to the city of mostly wood buildings, mixed in with some stone and mud brick structures.

The largest was the wood and stone keep that lie in the center of the town. Adjacent to it was the largely brick jailhouse, which was relatively large. Given that Shoonsville was a city on the crossroads of various Kingdoms and racial territories, a large assortment of individuals, many of them criminals and exiles, made their way through this town. Because of this, crime was high and order was difficult to maintain, though the current overseer of the city was working hard to change this fact.

That jailhouse was the eventual destination for the column and the people were divided up into groups and shoved into cells. Their shackles remained, though the chains were removed, giving them freedom of movement within the cells.

The dwarf, halfling and farmer boy, since they had been shackled next to each-other, wound up in the same cell, along with another few people. A couple prisoners were already inside the cell, prisoners captured at earlier times.

"Well this is a fine mess." The half-ling said once the soldiers left. Then she looked at the people already there, "Hi guys."

"Evenin'." a man with long black hair and tattered clothes replied, "Ye wouldn't happen tuh have snuck a bottle in 'ere with ye?"

The man spoke with a thick accent indicative of the Northeastern coastal towns. By his unkept appearance, he looked to have been in the jail for at least a couple weeks.

"Sure," the dwarf said sarcastically, "we snuck one in, right along with the keys and our weapons!"

"As the matter of fact..." The half-ling replied... though which one she was replying to wasn't immediately clear, at least not until she procured a small corked bottle containing transparent fluid.
