"They'll probably let us go in the morning." Glink said. "If not... well..."

Glink narrowed her eyes and looked left, then right, then left again, before leaning forward and saying in a hushed tone, "If not, then I have a cunning plan."

Glink did another quick look around.

"Well, lets just say it involves a spoon, a piece of parchment, and three flasks containing intricate and special tonics of my own design."

Killroy's expression went blank.

"Really, now...?"

"Not now, I'd wait till tomorrow at least, in case they just let us go."

"In any case, maybe ye all should try an' git some sleep." Killroy suggested.

Mhaenal looked like he was already doing that, despite the less than comfortable conditions and noisy roommates.

"You're all fools! Curiously elated fools!" Todd said as he leaned against a wall and shut his eyes.

Gradually, all the prisoners fell to sleep, as did most of the folks in the town. Save only for the night sentries and the patrons of a handful of less reputable pubs.

The first half of the night went by with little occurrence, but a couple hours after midnight there came the sounds of frantic screams from the roadway leading up to the city. The gateguards were roused from their drowsy positions as a lone man came scrambling to the front gate, wailing and babbling hysterically.

"Open up! Let me in! Don't let them get me! Open! OPEN THE DOOR!" he screamed, as he pounded upon the heavy oaken gate.

The gatemaster stared down at the man for a moment, then upon the surrounding woods and fields. There was no sign of pursuit that he could see. Perhaps the man had been set upon by bandits on the roadside and the trauma of the moment had sent him into a delirium.

"Open the gate." he finally commanded to his men.

Two guards complied and removed the heavy plank that barred the two gate doors shut. Then they swung the right door open, revealing the man, who landed in a heap at the guards' feet. For a split second, the guards thought he had simply collapsed from exhaustion, but further examination revealed an arrow embedded in the back of the man's throat. It had to have just been fired...

"CLOSE THE GATE!" the gatemaster suddenly bellowed.

But he was already too late as a pair of frightfully accurate arrows came hurling from the darkness outside and struck each of the guards, killing one and wounding the other.

"Quick! The gate!" the cry went out from the guards as more men rushed to close the door.

But by the time those men reached it, a wave of barbarians was already pouring into the city.

"Ravagers! Call the men to arms!" the gatemaster roared.

His shouts were nearly drown out by a sudden savage war-cry from the blackness outside the wall. For hidden among the trees, shrubs and even in the muddy fields, an entire hoard of savages had been lying in wait. A small party of them had attacked the man further up the road, then let him run to the city gate to convince the guards to open it, thus allowing the bulk of their army easy access to the inner city.

Despite the cleverness of the plan, the "Ravagers" as they were known were utterly insane. Made up mostly of humans, but also having small numbers of elves and dwarves in their ranks, they came from beyond the Westernmost reaches of the known world, where it is said none are able to travel and return sane. The Ravagers were feared by all who lived beyond the protection of the larger kingdoms. Even though Shoonsville was at a crossroads of several kingdoms, but not part of any one of them, it had been thought to be safely far enough from the territories that the Ravagers were known to operate in.

It appeared that this line of thought was very wrong.

Soon, the tower watchmen were sounding their horns, waking the guards in the city barracks, along with most of the town. But the horde was already spreading into the city, lighting their own previously unlit torches with the ones currently in the city, and beginning to kill, loot, rape and burn everything in their path.

***

The noise was surely enough to wake the prisoners, though the commotion was still a distance away on the far-side of the city.

Glink was soon on her feet and approaching one of the barred windows, but found her eye level much to low to see out it.

"Anyone else hear that?" She asked, referring of course to the shouts and screams outside.

Killroy was already on his feet and by the window.

"Indeed." he said softly.

"Here it is," Todd said as he bolted towards the window, "I knew they would come. It is the time of the deception!"

"Are ya certain?" Glink asked with a frown, leaning closer to the window in an effort to hear more clearly. "Sounds like some sort of party to me."

"That would depend on which side you're on." Mhaenal said from right behind them. At some point he'd gotten up and walked across the cell, completely silent.

Glink looked the man up and down. Mostly up though, since she was short.

    "I'm on your left."

The shouts and screams drew closer and the prisoners were finally able to discern the word "Ravagers!" amidst the chaotic sounds.

At the far end of the cell hall, the night-shift jailer had been sleeping on a wooden stool. On his belt hung the keys to the jail cells, but he was hopelessly out of reach for anyone in the cells. But the noises had caused him to stir as well. He had just gotten to his feet when the door leading upstairs burst open.

"We need every man we have! The Ravagers are invading!" the newcomer, also a guard, declared frantically, "Hurry!"

He quickly turned and ran back up the stairs as the jailer shook the the grogginess from his head and began to jog down the cell block...

Mhaenal went to the door and as the jailer walked by he reached out to grab his shirt and pull him over.

Luckily for Mhaenal, the jailer was not thinking clearly and was jogging within easy reach of the prisoners (the hall was wide enough that he could have ran down the middle of the hall without being in arms-reach). Not expecting anyone to interfere with his dash to the door, he was easily seized and pulled against the cell by Mhaenal.

"Hey! What in-!?"
