Title: OOC - Cold Secrets
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jun 28 2013, 06:47 PM
-Cold Secrets RP- (http://forgerp.com/forums/index.php?topic=15.0)

------------------------------

So, who wants to create a new RP? 8)

I think it'd be fun to start a new RP with everyone currently here, and hopefully have it accessible enough that any future members could join in as well. So go ahead and suggest any story and setting ideas. Once an idea has been agreed upon, we can work out specifics.

A couple ideas I've thought of:
Modern-day superhero RP(Requires very little set up, since the setting is basically real life).
Generic medieval fantasy setting(Aeliss and I have actually started work on a fantasy setting, though it would require slightly more set up).
An RP set in an already established universe, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, or Lord of the Rings(This would only work if everyone here was actually familiar with the same setting)

A couple Aeliss has suggested to me are, zombie apocalypse, or World War 3.

So, discuss! And of course, feel free to make your own setting suggestions.

I'd go for a World War 3 roleplay, but with an interesting twist!

Do you have any ideas for a twist?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 06 2013, 08:54 PM
Something like, the World War 3 portion is only, maybe, a small part of the RP? Or, we make a multi-part RP. Essentially, we all play nations for the first part. We tear the world apart battling and whatnot. Then, after we realize what we've done and that the Earth can no longer sustain human life, we as nations attempt to put together a small band of colonists(however many RPers we have) combined with a few thousand frozen fetuses(fetii? fetusi?) on a ship to locate a new, Earth-like planet outside of the Milky Way. At that point we switch perspectives to the colonists searching for a new home in the stars, to create a new Earth.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 06 2013, 10:13 PM
Interesting idea. Though the idea of role playing as entire nations doesn't really appeal to me very much, I prefer more character-focused RPs over faction or army based RPs.

What if the RP started with the colonists arriving at the planet? There could be a brief backstory, about how WW3 nearly ravaged the planet, and no side really won. And the colonists could be from many different nations, so we'd have a pretty ethnically diverse group, which I think could be pretty interesting.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 07 2013, 06:44 PM
That sounds good as well. I could go for that. I roleplayed on another site where Nation/Faction Roleplaying was common place.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 07 2013, 09:14 PM
When should this take place? When they're leaving, traveling, arriving, or a while after they've colonized? Personally I think around the time they arrive would probably be best. Either that or when they're almost there.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 07 2013, 09:38 PM
If we consider cryogenics and cold-sleep functions, we could have it begin just   as they begin travel, to show the emotion trauma it would bring.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 07 2013, 09:47 PM
So, it'd start with them entering cryosleep, then we have a time jump ahead to when the ship arrives at the planet?

EDIT: I just got another idea - What if the ship crashes on the planet? The ship could wake all the characters from cryosleep because of an emergency, so they're all awakened, then just minutes later the ship is plunging down to the planet below. It would make the colonization more difficult, because they'd have fewer supplies and crew members.

Another edit: Another thing that could happen would be that the ship's captain, or whoever should have been in charge of the colonization, dies, thus forcing someone technically unqualified to take charge.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 07 2013, 10:33 PM
I dig both. The only issue being any crash from atmospheric proportion would probably obliterate the crew and/or colonists inside. We couldhave it so that a large portion of their equipment was fried and/or is obsolete by the time they reach a new planet.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 07 2013, 10:45 PM
Well, that all depends on how realistic we're trying to be. Although, it doesn't have to be that bad of a crash. The ship would probably have emergency systems in case of a crash, to slow it's fall. Or, some of the characters could make their way to the bridge and try to land it while it's plummeting downwards, and manage to get a rough landing.

Of course, a crash isn't totally necessary, I just think it'd be a neat beginning to an RP.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 07 2013, 11:12 PM
I agree. Perhaps it was a massive colony ship, and we are some of the few survivors of the cataclysmic crash?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 07 2013, 11:19 PM
Yeah, that sounds pretty good. So then there would be limited equipment, and only a few dozen people at most. Some of which would be NPCs of course.

Now I suppose the question is, does this planet have aliens? And if so, is there intelligent life, or just animals?

Oh, also the atmosphere should be slightly different from Earth's. Perhaps slightly lower gravity, so people can jump just a bit higher, and fall from greater heights. Not a HUGE difference, just a bit. Like say, being able to jump 6 feet high rather than just 2 or 3, like on Earth.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 08 2013, 04:23 PM
We also need to think of who would have gone. If it was all the survivors, or just the "best;" the young and fit; geniuses; etc. Or maybe a random raffle.

And the climate. I was thinking something desert-y, like Australia, but if the gravity is lower that might be too much like John Carter.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 08 2013, 09:55 PM
I was reading Analog Science Fiction, an E-Magazine, and I read about a good planet.

Picture this: Once you pierce the thick cloud layer of the planet, which is grey and foreboding as far as the eye can see, you take in the full image around you. For the most part, it is flat, with the exception of a number of hills- because they were certainly not mountains- dotting the landscape. The ground is the color of old cement, and looks to be made of the same material. On your starboard(right) side, is an inland sea coated in a thick layer of kelp/algae on the surface. Your atmospheric sensors on the ship read off temperature in both Celsius and Farenheit. The planet is cold, with an average temperature of 36 degrees Farenheit. Another sensor, which gathered information from your descent into orbit, displays the acceleration due to gravity on the planet. 4.2 m/s^2. Significantly less than Earth's, but not as little as the moon. And finally, as your ship touches down, the most complicated sensor on your craft reads off the chemical composition of the atmosphere. Enough oxygen, about as much as can be expected in mile-high conditions on Earth. Carbon-dioxide levels, normal.

Welcome to your new home.
fin
(Lol I wrote that on a whim)

On the topic of aliens, I was thinking an intelligent species, but doesn't get introduced until later in the Roleplay? And perhaps they are somewhat ruled by instict. Ex. A species with a developed language, culture, etc. Yet, it runs some facets of society are ruled by instinct such as leadership.

EDIT: Grammar. Word placement.

Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 08 2013, 10:24 PM
Love it. Both the planet idea, and definitely the waiting on the aliens. They can show up much later, after a small colony has been established, and the characters have had time to develop.

Alright, how about this for the RP beginning:

The ship is leaving Earth, which is almost completely in ruins. The ship doesn't contain everyone from Earth, just a few hundred. I imagine some people would want to remain and rebuild, but the RP isn't about them(Maybe a different RP in the future, who knows). There is a brief scene involving the main RP characters before they get into their cryopods. Then they get inside and begin their multi-decade journey to another solar system.

The RP resumes with the ship awakening people from stasis, because of some kind of emergency. They get out and discover that the ship is about to fly into an asteroid, or multiple asteroids. The pilots take manual control and save the ship, but it still "skims" the asteroid, damaging the hull, destroying a few rooms and equipment, and killing a few dozen people or so. The ship is damaged, but they manage to guide it down for a "rough landing". Not quite a crash, but close. I'm thinking about one hundred people survive.

Thoughts?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 08 2013, 10:41 PM
I like the idea. Perhaps we could add a bit more incentive to the roleplay and say that the colony ship split in half, and our main characters are elected to find the other half?

That could be a minor facet or a major plotline in the roleplay.

Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 08 2013, 10:54 PM
Yes! That'd also add some more suspense and intrigue to the story, not knowing what has become of the rest of the crew and colony. The characters could try to contact them, but their equipment could be broken(Or those on the other half's equipment could be broken). But on a planet so cold, the first priority would probably be to "set up shop", so to speak, and keep their half safe before heading out to find the others. Or at least, some characters would see it that way. Others may want to look immediately. Thus causing tension, and character development.

Definitely liking plans so far. Anything else before we start? I've actually got to go to bed soon, but it'd be cool if we could start tomorrow or the next day.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Tyler294 on Jul 09 2013, 07:02 AM
Sounds like the concept for a TV drama (that will ultimately only last three episodes before being pulled).

No thanks. Doesn't interest me.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 09 2013, 05:51 PM
I think it would be better if our side's radios (or whatever they're using) is still functional, but the other side's is broken. It would be more frustrating for the characters that way, not knowing if the others are dead or just not answering.

I love cold environments and the potential problems that come with them. Trees are great, too, but I don't want any forests near the camp, because there are always forests in RPs.

Rules: Literate, Dedicated (drop-outs have to kill their character), no age limit, two characters max (or maybe three, depending on how many players we have)...Anything else?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 13 2013, 01:31 PM
Sounds good to me. The only obvious things I see you're missing in the rules Aeliss, are the ratings, and rules on NPCs(Who's allowed to control the side characters and such). My preference on side character/NPCs is that anyone can introduce and control side characters, but that they shouldn't come up with NPCs just to agree with or help their main characters. But generally pretty loose rules on the matter.

Okay, so two more things, when do we start and what do we call the RP? I'm ready to start whenever everyone else is. As for the title, the best I've come up with is "Brave New World". Which is a bit overused/cliche, so if anyone has any better ideas, do share them. I'm terrible at coming up with names.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 13 2013, 05:47 PM
I'm pretty good with names. How about something to do with the planet?

"Cold Secrets" perhaps?

"Terra Nova"

"To The Stars"

"Salvation of Mankind"

Or summat like that.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 13 2013, 06:49 PM
Cold Secrets and To the Stars sound the best to me, especially the former.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 15 2013, 07:29 PM
I really like Cold Secrets. I'm not entirely sure if it quite works with this RP though. The Cold bit works really well (obviously :p), but what about the Secrets? I dunno. It could work, or we could think of another RP to use it for sometime. *shrug*
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 15 2013, 07:30 PM
Well, since there's going to be mystery, and possibly aliens or conspiracies, I think secrets works fine.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 15 2013, 07:41 PM
I guess. And I'm not thinking of anything else awesome to go with the name.  ;D  So when do we start? We should set a specific date.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 15 2013, 11:45 PM
I think first we should advertise this a little bit. Right now it's only us 3, perhaps we could advertise on TeenInk(our original starting place) or update the news of the site. Perhaps you could get an email list or something to notify other RolePlayers when an admin-crafted or regular RP is about to begin?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 18 2013, 02:35 PM
I've been advertising some on TI. I think BlackBadge is coming, and Zech seemed interested.

Who are you on TI? I didn't know you were from there.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 18 2013, 06:57 PM
My RP friends are from Moddb(Tyler294 being one of them), and they aren't interested. Anyway, we don't need a huge amount of people, 3-5 would be ideal to start with, in my opinion.
Title: Re: New RP

Garyn, you're probably right. Have any of you seen After Earth?

Title: Re: New RP

Nope. But BlackBadge was telling me a little about it, and how this RP sounded similar.
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 20 2013, 06:35 PM
There were three ships, but only one got hit. The others continued on. The names are Inception, Endeavor, and Hyperion. Our characters are on The Inception. The ship model is Ark. Is this all okay?
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 20 2013, 06:43 PM
Perhaps we find out later they were attacked by aliens? And once we get the RP started I seriously encourage using off-site links for picture reference n st00f
Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 20 2013, 07:31 PM
Maybe. Or maybe when we find the aliens, if we do, we think they attacked us, when they actually didn't...Or if they did for what they thought was self-defense. That would cause problems. >8D

I second that. Though, for character skeletons, I think there should also be some written details that you can't see from photos. Like, height, if they've got any tattoos or scars that are hidden, etc.

Title: Re: New RP
Post by: Aeliss Novak on Jul 20 2013, 09:22 PM
Lol, kay. :p

Rules
1. Dedicated. Do not join if you can’t stay. If you want to leave for any reason, you have to kill your character off in a way that makes sense. You can’t just leave and say “Kill my character if you want.” You have to do it.
2. Literate. An occasional mistake is okay, but please try to be as literate as you can.
3. Keep it PG-13. No excessive profanity, sexual content, etc. We want this RP to be open to anyone.
4. No Powerplaying, unless the creator of the character specifically asked you to (though, try to avoid asking unless absolutely necessary).
5. No Godmodding. Keep in mind that not all of these people are strong, good fighters, geniuses, etc. Some might be, but a majority of the colonists would be regular citizens. Stick with the supplies they would have on hand, and don't go inventing random things out of convenience. People can't just go around pulling Neutron Death Rays out of their butts.
6. No Sympathy Sams or Mary Sues.
7. Keep it realistic. Tech isn't drastically different from what it is now. Guns still have bullets, not lasers; ships don't travel at the speed of light (hence the cryo-freezing); and there is no insta-heal goop, though maybe we can have something that speeds it along.
7. Follow the rules posted here  (http://forgerp.com/forums/index.php?topic=2.0)at all times.

Do these look good? Any suggestions?
Title: Re: New RP

Looks good to me! I would add some genre specific rules(ex. set a tech standard so that people aren't pulling Neutron Death Rays out of their butts.)

Awesome! I'm psyched! Is it alright if I play an important figure(but not the captain and/or general)?
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Jul 25 2013, 05:16 PM
I was thinking it'd be more interesting if the captains and leaders had died in the crash, thus forcing one or more of the colonists to take charge.

I would be fine if you controlled the guy/gal that got picked/volunteered to be the colonist leader though.
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: ADudeNamedDude on Jul 25 2013, 05:34 PM
I was thinking more along the lines of a surviving soldier or something. Someone with a smidge of survival knowledge.

Yeah, that's fine. The colonists can come from almost any background.

Um, whenever a roleplay was getting really good (we called them character chats, because we used our actual characters and stuff), all the roleplayers would figure out what time zones they were in and a certain time to get on so we could, like, collaborate. I mean, just an idea.
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion

Aeliss and I are both in Oregon, so, Pacific time.

Do you and/or Dude have Steam and/or Skype? That could make communication easier.

Welcome to the site, btw =)
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: Satellite1397 on Aug 15 2013, 01:34 PM
No, but what's a steam? I'll look into that one. A better way might actually be phone numbers, if you're comfortable with that. I have my phone on me virtually all the time, and when you guys are on you could text me and I could get on and vice versa.
I'm in central, by the way.
And I'm terrible at timezones - people usually told me what time would be best to get on. I was thinking right after school or after dinnertime. Definitely on weekends.
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Aug 15 2013, 01:47 PM
Steam is a platform used for gaming, talking, etc. Here's a link: http://store.steampowered.com/

It's probably not for you unless you play computer games though. As for phones, Aeliss and I don't have phones, so instant chats like on Skype or Steam work better for us.

I was waiting for Dude to post... maybe we should just go ahead and have the crash scene, then Dude can join whenever he's able. I'll send him a PM and ask him if he's going to be able to join soon, I didn't really want to start without him since the RP was practically his idea.

I mean, it's been like 13 days...
Title: Re: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: Garyn Dakari on Aug 31 2013, 02:02 PM
I sent him a private message, so he should get an email as well. How about after 15 days of absence we just go ahead with it? And that would go for potential other RPs as well. Tomorrow it'll have been 15 days since his last post, so either that day or the day after we should just continue if we don't hear from him. With this kind of RP he'll be able to join in late without a problem anyway.

Not really on topic, but are you familiar with Star Wars and would you be interested in starting a Star Wars RP as well? PlasmicPlatypus wants to start a Star Wars RP, and it'd give us something to do any time Cold Secrets is inactive.

It's been long enough, I went ahead and posted in Cold Secrets. Feel free to have any of your characters run into mine, either of you. Or they could even wake up in the same station, it's up to you.
Title: Cold Secrets Discussion
Post by: Tyler294 on Mar 01 2014, 11:34 AM
So I read Cold Secrets up to this point. Talk about a slow moving RP... Anyway, I just wanna note a couple things:

- All the equipment and especially the food would've had to be in some sort of cryo storage too. Except the Twinkies, I'm sure they are just fine. But any of the other things, like coffee, peanuts, etc. would've needed to be frozen, because even long-lasting things aren't going to survive 300 years.

- The moon really isn't that cold, comparatively speaking. But I suppose it could only be early winter.

- If it is a moon, you guys may want to make it more apparent that the gravity is much lighter. So far it's only been noted briefly, but none of the characters have really reacted to its effects. Also, remember to account the sizes of what you think Eden and this moon are, along with their respective mass, as this will effect gravity and their orbits. It's hard to imagine a big, heavy moon orbiting a planet that isn't much bigger than its moon.

***

And so, another note is that I may consider joining later on, because I thought up an idea after rereading everything here. But it'd kind of hinge on what you guys want done with the other side of the ship.

Well, the one gal got her hands on peanuts pretty quickly/easily, so I was wondering if there just wasn't stuff sitting around randomly, which wouldn't make sense.

So anyway, once you guys are all here, I would wanna talk about what to do with the other half of the ship. I kind of think they should fall under the control of less... "nice"... people, if you know what I mean.
